Now that all free users can access OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice function, you can stop using Siri as your primary voice assistant on your iPhone—that is, assuming you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. Since the iPhone's launch, the Mute button has been replaced with the new Action Button, which may be customized on Apple's most recent devices. Users can use the button for purposes more than just turning off their ringer by accessing a new Settings menu.
Forget Siri. Turn your iPhone’s ‘Action Button’ into a ChatGPT voice assistant instead |
You can assign the Action Button to a variety of functions, depending on your preferences. For example, it can launch the Magnifier app, record a voice memo, activate the flashlight, access the camera, use an accessibility feature, or run an
The latter is the option you’ll want to use to turn the button into a trigger for ChatGPT.
Associating this iOS Shortcut with the Action Button would only result in an error before Wednesday's announcement that made Voice access free for all ChatGPT users, as Voice access required a ChatGPT+ subscription. That's no longer a problem, so anyone can use ChatGPT instead of Siri by setting up their Action Button to activate the Voice access feature of ChatGPT.
To accomplish this, swipe to the "Shortcut" option towards the bottom of the iOS Settings screen after swiping down to the "Action Button" menu. After tapping the blue "Choose a Shortcut" button, you'll need to scroll through the alphabetized list of compatible apps to find and tap "ChatGPT." Simply tap the "Start voice" Shortcut that is already there on the next screen.
Note that you’ll need to have the Shortcuts app downloaded on your iPhone if it isn’t already.
After setting everything up, you can start your ChatGPT voice session by pressing and holding the Action Button. For their ChatGPT assistant, users can select from five distinct voices: Ember, Sky, Breeze, Juniper, and Cove. Then, just speak your inquiries to ChatGPT directly and hear its answers; it's like Siri, only much, much smarter.
It should be noted that ChatGPT is by no means the only app that makes use of the new feature on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This button can also be used for other everyday activities, such as ordering your preferred Starbucks coffee, beginning a workout, Shaming a song, making a phone call to a loved one, making a new note, and more.
The Action Button shortcuts features have also been incorporated into several third-party apps, such as the music apps AirScrobble, Albums, Endel, Longplay, Music Tracker, MusicHarbor, and Tape It; the recipe and food apps Ambre, Calory, and Crumbl; the utilities CardsPointers, Opal, Sleep Cycle Kids, Tide Guide, and WaterMinder; the productivity apps Doneit, Drafts, Focused Work, GoodLinks, LookUp, Rewind, Streaks, Tasks, Things, Thoughts, TickTick, and Timery; the photography apps Halide; the workout apps Liftin'; the reading apps Books and Instapaper; the entertainment apps Movie Tracker and Soka; and even other AI utilities like Petey, among others.
If none of these work, you can also create your own unique Shortcuts by tapping the plus (+) symbol located in the top-right corner of the Shortcuts app's main screen, followed by the options to "New Shortcut," "Rename" (to give your Shortcut a name), and "Done."
Once you select "Add Action," a list of action categories will appear. You can select an action from each category (such as Media or Web) to find it and add it to your shortcut. Swipe up on the search bar at the bottom of the screen, select an action once more, and add another. Once you're done, hit "Done," and your newly created custom shortcut will be added to your collection and appear in the categories labeled "All Shortcuts" and "My Shortcuts." Once this is finished, you can go back to the Action Button menu and give the button your own unique shortcut.
